Did most of you notice the forum was shut down on the evening of 10/13? - In the midst of the troll's and other's rants, Jeff Kaplan made an appearance on another sub-forum, which I took as a warning, then after the hatecrap continued, the Forum was shut down until noon the next day.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm no longer going to feed any negativity at the GD forum. I saw that shutdown as a "Time out". I do not care if Koch, Tito,sm2ile2s or some "suspicious" first time poster posts here. If they are discussing the music as polite humans, I don't care who they are.
Please be kind (as i preach to myself too) Hearts can change, peeps can become better with positive vibes in these tough times.

i viewed the shutdown as a much needed timeout.

it certainly worked. i got caught up in the guy's nonsense and had some fun with him too, but i soon realized it needed to stop. that shit happens on every other forum. let's not bring it here too. peace folks.

and i agree about restarting a jgb thread. i need to hear more jerry! there's not enough!

Probably unrelated. When i went to check the forum the other morning and noticed it wasn't there, i next checked the LMA forum and it was also missing. I doubt they shut off multiple forums because of what was happening here.

"I doubt they shut off multiple forums because of what was happening here."

I can't see that either, but it wouldn't be too surprising I guess. Things were getting out pretty out of hand.

Were you punishing us Jeff? I've never before seen the error message that I got that day.

If there was anything other than a technical problem pure and simple then I'll start fricaseeing my fedora. There was nothing worth even noticing by the Archivegods, never mind punishing. It wasn't close to 'getting out of hand'- the blue skies of Gratefuldeadworld have been clouded over by far worse than that.

" It wasn't close to 'getting out of hand"

what would you consider getting out of hand then?

he resulted in the majority of forum discussion being nothing about the GD.

this a GD discussion forum, and the level of non-GD discussion that resulted from him was out of hand imo. the guy was incredibly rude and disrespectful to everyone and was greatly detracting from the experience here.

There's a very large level of 'non GD' exchanges going on here on a daily basis - it's the broad range of opinion and interest in all kinds of topics that gives this forum its appeal; if there was nothing but endless recycling of the Funkiest Post-Brent Shakedown debate or Parking Lot Anecdotes Volume XXXI this would be just a sad old fanboy hangout.

And if you were so upset by this person 'detracting from the experience' then why were you such an enthusiastic provider of fresh troll food?

"There's a very large level of 'non GD' exchanges going on here on a daily basis"

There's a huge difference between the standard non-Dead thread we see from respected forum members, and the garbage posted by trolls.

I'm all in favor of some non-Dead discussion, as long as it doesn't dominate the forum. Troll posts have no redeeming value. The other non-Dead topics usually spark good, interesting discussion.

"And if you were so upset by this person 'detracting from the experience' then why were you such an enthusiastic provider of fresh troll food?"

First off, I can assure you it did not upset me. I was quite amused initially, and continued to go back and forth with him, as did quite a few others. Enough was enough though and I didn't want things to progress any further so I requested that everyone stop responding to him in any way.

If you request something of the forum and it happens, it's a sign of the Apocalypse.

I think this post from tracy is a smoking gun - that this was purely a technical glitch on their end...

hmmm....
"sorry, my bad -- should be fixed now!
-tracey, archive staff"

and

"yah, a ~15 hour outtage on forums
*is* something to be concerned about 8-p

sorry again!"

seems to admit that oversight was lacking, or nobody was minding the store at the time of the outage. Just sayin'. Then again, since there's been nothing further, perhaps Jeff is more vigilant these days...

rasta, on a forum dedicated to free speech, why do you think they (Jeff) would care for the nursery school prattling of our forum? No yelling, "Fire!", in the theater took place. It was the usual garbage, from the usual person. I used masturbation as an metaphor (I hope just symbolism, but you can't really be sure) of this person's motivations. Every time we engage him, we become a piece of pornography for him. The back flow preventor value is the only solution , but it is a very difficult one to practice in reality. I became involved the other day, much to my own personal embarrassment. It was not the content of my posts (mostly), but the feeling of contributing my time, thoughts, and energy to the spectacle. I'm sure I did not say anything at all to him that he didn't hear before. I don't understand such a need for attention that you will go to debasing lengths, but I don't have to feed it.

So, I have two questions.

Ring, would you please consider re-posting the beginning of your JGB thread at some point? It will take a different form, but I'm sure most folks can at least cut and paste if needs be from the original post.

Why don't we ask Jeff if there was a cause and effect? My guess is it has nothing to do with us or our kitty litter box playing.

just my opinion, tho i do remember a warning a few months back from Jeff >>
http://www.archive.org/post/386868/greetings

I also noted that after Ring posted the JGB info, the ungawa guy posted on the thread >>

http://www.archive.org/post/396609/happiness-is-jgb-for-althea

with this simple comment "Excellent C John, and bloody nice post"

Then the shit began. I'm not condoning the guy's nastiness, but he didn't start it. A first time poster that was jumped on big time! I'd care less if he was some other previous multi-poster. try to be civil or ignore ones posts if you don't like them. If Satan himself wants to discuss music, fine with me - lol

Yeah, I noticed... and for those on the East Coast it was mid-afternoon went things went back to normal. Your advice well-taken, rasta. Feed your soul, not a troll.
